Cell Phone Policy

Cell Phone and Electronic Device Policy

At Welby Community School of the Arts, we believe that meaningful learning, strong relationships, and active engagement require our full attention. To support a focused learning environment and ensure student safety, the following expectations apply to both students and staff.

Student Cell Phones and Electronic Devices

Students may bring cell phones and personal electronic devices to school; however, devices must remain turned off and out of sight during the school day unless specifically authorized by a staff member for educational purposes.

Students are responsible for securing their personal devices. Welby Community School of the Arts and Mapleton Public Schools are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged personal property.

First Offense

  • Device is confiscated by the teacher and returned to the student at the end of the school day.

Second Offense

  • Device is confiscated and turned over to the principal.
  • Parent/guardian is contacted.
  • The device must be picked up by a parent/guardian in the main office.

Third Offense

  • A cell phone contract is developed with the student and family.
  • The student must turn the device into the main office at the start of each school day.
  • The device may be picked up from the office at the end of the school day.
  • Additional consequences or supports may be implemented as needed.

Staff Cell Phones and Electronic Devices

Staff members serve as role models for students and are expected to model appropriate technology use throughout the school day.

Cell phones should only be used during instructional time for emergencies or school-related purposes. Personal phone calls, texting, and social media use should be limited to lunch periods, planning periods, or other non-student contact times.

To ensure active supervision and engagement with students, staff should not:

  • Talk on personal cell phones while supervising students.
  • Use cell phones during instruction except for emergencies or instructional purposes.
  • Walk through hallways or common areas engaged in personal phone conversations while students are present.
  • Allow personal device use to interfere with instruction, supervision, or interactions with students and families.
